Boston Terriers: 6 Fun Facts of the All-American Dog Breed

The Boston Terrier is a highly intelligent, compactly built breed, the result of crossing an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier. They were originally bred after the Civil War to be fighting dogs.

But that’s not all there is to know about Boston Terriers. Did you know:

1. The Boston Terrier was the first dog breed that originated in the United States to be recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), which admitted the breed in 1893.

2. The Boston Terrier is the state dog of Massachusetts.

3. Boston Terriers are nicknamed “the American Gentleman” because of their characteristically gentle disposition and dapper looks.

4. Boston Terriers are mostly commonly black and white, but other acceptable colors include brindle, seal (black with red highlights). The dark color must be proportional to the white markings on the dog, the AKC says.

5. Most Boston Terrier puppies must be delivered by caesarian section due to the large, round shape of the dogs’ heads.

The short-snouted Boston Terrier, along with Pugs and Shih Tzus, are brachycephalic, meaning they have small nostrils, long palates, and a narrow trachea. Brachycephalic dogs are prone to snoring and complications with general anesthesia.
